Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
John Bunyan’s Pilgrim's Progress was first published back in 1678 and is now second only to the Bible in the number of copies it has sold worldwide. It has even been called “the second best book in all the world.”
"But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ," - Philippians 3:20
Those who know Christ as Lord and Savior understand that this world is not our home. We are truly pilgrims here on earth on a journey towards our heavenly home. Our experience on this journey is not an easy one. The path that leads to life is not wide and easy to walk on but is narrow and difficult (Matthew 7:13-14). We do tend to get sidetracked and consumed with the things of this world. While it's not a bad or sinful to have a house and possessions, it is sinful when those things have our hearts. When they do, we forget... We forget that our citizenship is in heaven and not in this world. We lose focus and start putting our minds on earthly things rather than the things that are above. This book is a great reminder of that struggle and a great help to learn to live as a pilgrim.
Christian Allegory
Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical story about the journey of a man named “Christian,” from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. For those who are unfamiliar with what allegory is, it is a story or poem that can be interpreted to have a hidden meaning. In this case, Christian is a man who leaves his sinful life and who is led toward salvation and eternal life. Every character and place that Christian encounters is either an aid or an obstacle in his progress toward the Celestial City (Heaven) and his growth in the Christian walk.
Even though this book is one of the most published books, I have never heard of it until a couple years ago. Many other Christians from different backgrounds that I know have not heard of it as well and this is a tragedy. This book is incredible. It’s a masterpiece. If you like The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, you will love this story.
