Letters Of William Still

The work of the pastor is to feed and tend the flock of God. In these letters of William Still to his congregation at Gilcomston South Church of Scotland you will find valuable insights on how to be a faithful minister. While the name William Still may not be well known…his example and influence has shaped the way that the Scriptures are expounded with so many ministers in the Church of Scotland.

William Still pastored in the same church for 50 years, from 1945 until shortly before his death in 1997. In these letters you will see a man who was honest with his congregation. You will read some hard words he had to give to those who were technically members of the church but we’re not participating in the Sunday gathering. You will see his chief convictions about the authority of Scripture, the Person of Christ, the nature of the gospel, important ecclesiastical insights and pastoral convictions on the subject of loving, and human care for God’s people.

This book will be a blessing for you to read devotionally. Here is an example of the humility and grace seen in Still’s letters:

P.S. I should say that I am very conscious of many faults and failings, and it is in the interest of the Church and congregation that I should be told about them. If I have done anything that I ought not to have done, please tell me, and I think you will find me ready to confess and to make amends. Do not hesitate to speak frankly to me about all things, for I do not take offense.

In these couple sentences you see a pastor who was approachable and willing to admit when he was wrong. Do you invite people to speak into your life like this? I cannot recommend this book enough to both pastors and lay people. You will be encouraged by reading the letters of a faithful minister of the gospel.
